ABSTRACT
In recent years, the growing interest in greywater reuse as a sustainable solution to address water scarcity challenges has intensified, particularly in water-stressed regions. Greywater generated from household laundry operations represents one of the most complex categories of greywater due to its elevated concentrations of detergents, organic compounds, surfactants, and other pollutants. This study evaluated the treatment efficiency of several chemical coagulants — namely alum (Aluminum Sulfate), Ferric Chloride (FeCl₃), and Ferrous Sulfate (FeSO₄) — alongside a natural coagulant (Sidr, Ziziphus spina-christi) and activated carbon as an adsorbent, in treating laundry greywater. Jar Test experiments were conducted under controlled operating conditions to assess treatment performance based on changes in turbidity (NTU), Total Dissolved Solids (TDS), and pH. Results demonstrated that Liquid Alum (Liquid Alum) was the most efficient and stable coagulant, reducing turbidity from 226 NTU to 130 NTU at the highest dosage applied, reflecting superior turbidity removal efficiency of approximately 42.5%. Laboratoryprepared alum also exhibited good turbidity reduction performance, though the optimal dosage was not clearly defined within the tested range. In contrast, Ferric Chloride failed to achieve the anticipated removal efficiency due to the inconsistency in floc formation, attributed to the complex interaction between its coagulation mechanisms and the specific characteristics of the laundry wastewater. Ferrous Sulfate showed a counterintuitive increase in turbidity with increasing dosage, indicating its unsuitability as a standalone coagulant under the prevailing conditions. Activated carbon demonstrated high efficiency in removing turbidity and organic matter, achieving a minimum turbidity of 50 NTU at the highest dosage tested, confirming its role as an effective adsorption-based post-treatment stage. The natural coagulant (Sidr) exhibited limited and unstable efficiency, while also contributing to an increase in TDS at certain dosage levels. These findings indicate that laundry greywater treatment necessitates an integrated approach combining coagulation and adsorption processes, given the compositional complexity of this wastewater stream. The study also underscores the critical importance of selecting the appropriate coagulant type and optimizing the dosage to achieve maximum treatment efficiency. Keywords: Greywater treatment; Coagulation; Jar Test; Turbidity removal; Alum; Activated carbon; Sidr (Ziziphus spina-christi); Laundry wastewater; Water reuse
